In addition to her tenure with the Symphony, Frederickson taught music in the Hartford Public Schools, inspiring generations of young musicians. She shares her love of music and the outdoors with her husband, HSO Assistant Principal Bassist Bob Groff.

Retiring Musicians Recognition

The HSO also recognized three beloved musicians upon their retirement, celebrating their artistry and impact on the orchestra and the community:

  • Karin Fagerburg, First Violin (47 Years of Service) A member of the HSO since 1978, Fagerburg served as assistant concertmaster from 2002 to 2019. In addition to her symphony work, she has taught violin and viola at Central Connecticut State University and the Hartt School Community Division. A devoted chamber musician, she has performed widely—including in a quartet with family members—and have appeared with festivals and orchestras across the country.
  • Martha “Marty” Knieriem, Viola (44 Years of Service) Knieriem, who joined the HSO after completing studies at UNC, Eastman, and Ithaca College, has been an active performer and educator throughout New England. She has appeared with the Opus 3 String Trio and collaborated with renowned ensembles including the Emerson and Lenox String Quartets. Knieriem also served as co-director of the Kinhaven Music School Junior Session and taught at institutions including Mount Holyoke and Smith College.
  • Rebecca Noreen, Third Bassoon/Contrabassoon (23 Years of Service) Noreen has contributed richly to the HSO since 2002, following studies at Manhattan School of Music and Western Washington University. A versatile bassoonist, she has performed with ensembles including the New Haven Symphony, Greater Bridgeport Symphony, and U.S. Coast Guard Band. She is also a dedicated educator, teaching at Connecticut College and previously at the University of Rhode Island and Hartt Community Division.

“These musicians have been the heart and soul of the Hartford Symphony for decades,” Phillips said. “Their artistry, teaching, and love of music have shaped our orchestra and inspired countless audiences. We honor not only their years of service but also the joy and excellence they brought to our stage.”
